In 1994, Hiroyuki Furuta introduced the N-confused porphyrin—a porphyrin isomer with an NNNC core, formed by exchanging a pyrrole nitrogen with its β-carbon. This structural reimagining, which he called “confusion,” opened new pathways in porphyrinoid chemistry
